What is secondary glazing?
Secondary glazing is a second window that is fitted over your existing window, on the inside. Secondary glazing helps to reduce the amount of heat lost through the window and the amount of noise coming in through the window.
Why do I need secondary glazing?
Windows and doors are weak points in your home; they allow heat to escape and cold air and noise to enter. Fitting wooden secondary glazing to your windows will significantly reduce noise and heat loss. You will save money on your heating bills, feel warmer in your home and it will be quieter.
Why wooden secondary glazing?
Because it looks good. Like your windows, the frame of our secondary glazing is made from wood. The wooden frame is handmade to match the design of your existing windows and can be painted, stained or varnished any colour, to exactly match the decoration of the original window.
This all helps create the illusion that the secondary glazing is part of the existing window frame. Our wooden secondary glazing reduces noise and heat loss, whist retaining the traditional character and style of the original window.
Can I install wooden secondary glazing if I live in a conservation area or listed building?
Yes. Our wooden secondary glazing is specifically designed to look like part of the original window frame. This makes it ideal for use in listed buildings and conservation areas because it allows the original features of the window to be retained. If required, the secondary glazing can be removed with no impact to the original window, other than filling in a couple of screw holes and minor redecoration.
How does wooden secondary glazing reduce heat loss?
Your wooden secondary glazing will have a draught proof system that stops cold draughts coming through the window. It will also reduce radiated heat loss (heat lost directly through the glass), and will reduce heat lost through conduction because the wooden frame is a poor conductor of heat.
How does wooden secondary glazing reduce noise?
Your secondary glazing will reduce noise by interfering with the way sound travels. The air gap created between the outside pane of glass and the secondary inside pane helps to reduce low frequency noise (e.g. trucks and trains).
The acoustic glass helps to reduce high frequency noise (e.g. noisy traffic, seagull screeching and people talking). Secondary glazing cannot block sound completely but it will help to dramatically reduce sound; the noise coming through your window will be much quieter and far less intrusive.
What type of glass is used in the wooden secondary glazing?
Your wooden secondary glazing will usually be fitted with acoustic glass. Acoustic glass consists of two panes laminated together using PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral).
PVB is an acoustic membrane which bonds the two panes of glass together, to give the appearance of a single pane of glass. The PVB membrane reduces noise by absorbing the sound energy and preventing the sound vibrations from travelling through the glass. Acoustic glass is effective at reducing high-frequency sounds.
What type of timber is used to make the wooden secondary glazing?
The frame of your secondary glazing is made from redwood (softwood) as standard. However, we are able to make the frame using any type of wood that you prefer. All the timber used to make our secondary glazing is obtained from sustainable sources.
How will my wooden secondary glazing be decorated?
The wooden frame of your secondary glazing will be painted, stained or varnished by hand, to match the decoration of your existing windows. This ensures the secondary glazing blends in with your windows, creating the impression that it is part of the original window.
However, if you would like something a little different, we can decorate the frame in any colour or finish of your choosing.
Will I still be able to have blinds or shutters?
If you already have blinds or shutters fitted to your windows, we may be able to adjust these so that you can continue to use them once the secondary glazing has been fitted.
We can also supply and fit shutters that have been specially made to work with our secondary glazing. Our shutters can be decorated in any colour or finish to exactly match the decoration of your windows and your secondary glazing.
How much does wooden secondary glazing cost?
All our secondary glazing is custom made to order. Your secondary glazing will be individually priced to account for the amount of work and time involved in making and fitting.
Our secondary glazing is not cheap to make and will not be comparable in price to standard aluminium or plastic secondary glazing. However, we are a small company that sells direct to the customer. This means we do not have expensive overheads to cover and we do not pay commissions to salesmen.
We believe in pricing our projects fairly and clearly so you know exactly what you are getting for your money. The price quoted will be a fair reflection of the amount of time and work that goes into producing a high quality product.
Will my secondary glazing be covered by a guarantee?
All our wooden secondary glazing is guaranteed for 8 years. In the unlikely event that anything should go wrong we will correct the problem free of charge; giving you the reassurance that you have invested in a high quality product that will look good and last for many years.
How long will delivery and installation take?
All our secondary glazing is individually handmade to order and takes approximately 6-8 weeks to make. Because of the time it takes to make, we can only work for a few customers at a time. Actual manufacture and installation times will vary depending on how busy we are at the time of ordering.
We will be able to advise a provisional fitting date upon confirmation of your order.
